Tying the Perfect Knot & Simple Flower arrangement

I've been going to a yoga class.
with an awesome instructor.
Unfortunately, this was her last week teaching our class.
She has to scale back as she begins to train for a 450 mile charity bike ride this summer.
She's the coolest, so positive and kind.
I'm going to miss her class. 

I gave her a little vase of roses as a thank you.
I love small vases of flowers tightly grouped.
Fun to have around your house
or to give to a friend. 

 To jazz up the vase, I added some burlap ribbon. 

You can make a simple arrangement 
by picking up a package of flowers, 
small vase (Dollar Store)
and wide burlap ribbon.

Have you ever tied a knot or bow that ends up crooked? 
With the ends of the bow at a diagonal and skiwampus?
This simple trick will help the ends go horizontal with the perfect knot.
Tie your ribbon around the vase.
Have the back of the ribbon go over the vase rim
to help the ribbon to stay in place and not slip down.
Tie once. One ribbon end will be facing up and the other down.

Take the top piece and wrap it under bottom piece, 
going around it and back through the loop.

Pull tight. Perfect!

Now trim your ends.
To make a "V" cut, fold your end in half
and cut it diagonally with your scissors pointing away from the knot. 
Open up the ends and "fluff".


A beautiful little arrangement.

Peep S'mores

What to do with left over Easter Peeps? Freeze them for summer! A couple of years ago my family discovered the deliciousness of a Peep s'more. It is now our go to method when making s'mores. Trust me - a Peep s'more is a superior s'more. The sugar outside coat of a Peep marshmallow almost caramelizing when roasted. You are now left with a sugary, crispy shell that adds just the right amount of crunch to the s'more. This crispy, sugar shell also protects the gooey, warm marshmallow which will melt in your mouth at first bite. It is sooo good! So, run out to your store. Go! Buy all the Peeps you want on clearance. They cost close to nothing right now. I bought my boxes of Peeps this morning for 50% off! Then, return home. Place your Peeps in the freezer and dream about the perfect s'mores you'll be tasting this summer!

Easter Nest Cookies

Our family loves making Easter nest cookies. It's one of our traditions. Here's how to make them:

No Bake Cookies

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup butter

Bring all the above ingredients to a boil. Then, pour over the following ingredients which are mixed together in a large bowl: 3 cups oatmeal (quick oats), 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup coconut. Mix everything together until well blended. With a cookie dough scoop or just a regular spoon, drop dough by the spoonfuls onto a plate and shape like a bird's nest. BE CAREFUL! The dough will be very hot so please wait a minute or two before touching. Once your nest is complete, place egg shape candies in the nest! Last night we used Cadbury eggs or you can use jelly beans.

It's a great family activity and super yummy!

Easter Table Ideas Roundup

Today I'm rounding up some ideas for your Easter table.

So far, this is what I have going for my table centerpiece in the kitchen.
I might use some of this for our Easter dinner table,
but was looking for a little more inspiration.
So, I went out to the "blog world" and found some terrific ideas!

Potato Cakes

Enjoy this delicious side dish with herb sour cream- see both recipes below!

Potato Cakes

2 Potatoes, peeled and shredded
2 Green Onion thinly diced
2 Large Eggs, lightly beaten
3 Tbsp. Flour
1 Tbsp. Lemon Juice, fresh 
Salt and Pepper to taste

Shred your potatoes, I like to use a simple cheese grater.  Add in onions, flour, lemon juice, salt and pepper.  Lightly beat your eggs and add.   On medium heat, melt 2 Tbsp. of butter.  Using a 1/4 measuring cup, scoop out potato mixture and press down into skillet.  Cover and cook for about 4 minutes on each side- until lightly browned.    Serve with my herb sour cream!

Herb Sour Cream

1/2 Cup Sour Cream
1 Tbsp. Fresh Chives
2 tsp. Fresh Dill or Thyme
2 tsp. Lemon Juice

Mix herbs and lemon juice well with sour cream.  Allow to chill or serve immediately.

Hello Spring--decorative holiday board

Are you ready for spring?
We are with our latest holiday board.

You'll need:
pine board 5 1/2" wide by 46" long
craft acrylic paint (I'm using Americana Sea Breeze & Snow)
stencil brush & painters tape
wood stain (I'm using Rust-Oleum Sunbleached)

Paint one coat of Sea Breeze on the front of your board.
Paint it roughly, so you can see the wood underneath 
(then you won't have to sand it when distressing)


Paint on the "hello"
I cut a stencil out of my Silhouette, but you can use this 
and trace on the word by following our transfer lettering technique found {here}.
I put the "hello" about an inch and 1/2 down from the top of the board.

I left a 4" space and stenciled in the "S".
Tape down the "S" with painters tape on one side of the stencil piece.

The key with stenciling is to use as little paint on your brush as possible.  
Dip your brush in the paint and dab it off on a paper plate or paper towel. 
You can always do a second layer, if you want it darker, 
but it will turn out darker than you think.
Too much paint on a brush will cause the paint to go under the stencil.

Stencil on the rest of "SPRING".
Sand any edges or parts of the board 
where you want the wood to show through to distress and pick up the stain.
Next, I stained the wood with Sunbleached --as linked above. 
This particular Rust-Oleum stain, is not really smelly and dries quickly.
Rub on some stain and wipe off with a rag. 
I really love the light gray.

In that 4" space under the "hello", tie some ribbon and silk flowers

Love how this board turned out!

Chicken Salad

Chicken Salad

1 red apple, cored and diced
1 cup red grapes sliced
2 celery stalks diced
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup mayonnaise 
3 Tablespoons heavy cream 
2 cups cooked, shredded chicken 

Place cored, diced apples in a mixing bowl. Add lemon juice and toss. Then, to the same bowl, add grapes and celery. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. In a separate bowl, mix the mayonnaise and heavy cream together. Add this mixture to the bowl with apples, grapes and celery. Toss together until well blended. Then, add the chicken and stir until all ingredients are combined. Serve chicken salad on croissants.

Breakfast Yogurt and Oats Fruit Parfait

I've really been getting into eating this yogurt, oats and fruit parfait in the mornings.
It's fresh, quick and healthy.

You'll need:
 steel cut oats, single serve size yogurt, your favorite berry or fruit and nuts

This really works best with steel cut oats.
Put 1/4 cup into your bowl.
Spread your favorite yogurt on top.
Add about 1/2 cup of your favorite berries.  
Top with some chopped pecans or almonds.

You can eat it right away or let it sit for a few minutes to soften the oats.
I'll usually make it up and then throw in a load of laundry or make school lunches and then eat.  Enjoy your mornings with this healthy start!

chopped pecans or almonds nuts

 This really works best with steel cut oats.  Put 1/4 cup into your bowl.  Spread your favorite yogurt on top.  Add about 1/2 cup of your favorite berries.  Top with some chopped pecans or almonds. You can eat it right away or let it sit for a few minutes to soften the oats. Enjoy your morning!
