New Year, New You, New Home Changes
Happy New Year!
It's natural at this time of year to want a fresh start.
We get that urge to make a change, clean things out and make better habits.
A new year, a new start, a time full of possibilities and changes.
I'm not really a New Years resolution maker.
I've tried having a "word of the year" but that mantra fades after a few months.
If these things work for you- do it!
However, just starting a new year always motivates me in two ways.
First, I get the urge to really clean out and organize one area of the house in a big way
and then do an overall, quick clean or organization of other areas.
Getting rid of the clutter and mess really helps your overall mood and encourages personal change too.
This might take a while
or I enlist my kids to help hit the space in a day,
but I know it's the process and effort that counts.
Don't give up! Any progress is progress!
I usually make a list or review areas that need special attention.
I'm currently in the process of re-organizing the craft room.
It's been what I like to call an "organized mess" for years.
It's always the last place on my list to get to,
lots of "projects in progress" and supplies sitting out,
and often becomes a dumping ground for things that will be "put away later"
or that we're not quite sure where they should be put.
(You might have one of these spaces in your house)
We've been working hard on this room,
building furniture and starting to organize.
All the things I need to go through have been put in this corner.
My "helpers" have all gone back to school,
so it's up to me now!
Depending on my schedule, I'm trying to set aside a set time each day to work on it.
Progress is progress no matter the time frame.
Second, I like to evaluate where I'm at
and what little changes I can do to better myself.
How can I become more...
Four areas to consider: social, spiritual, physical and mental/learning.
Are there little things I can do to become more than I am now
in one or all of these areas?
Stats show that people tend to make too many or unrealistic goals in January.
A wise man once said, "Try a little harder to be a little better"
So start small and build from there.
Don't "run faster than you have strength" while still staying committed and moving forward.
Here are some questions to ponder when evaluating what little changes to make:
What were fulfilling moments from last year? How can I create more of those this year?
What did I do last year that built my confidence? Can I try something new to build confidence? What experiences can I participate in that build myself up?
What challenge did I overcome? What did I learn?
What relationships enriched my life? How can I make time for them and nurture these connections with people? If I'm lonely, what social settings can I be a part of to find friends? Be brave. How can I connect with real people (not virtual)? What local groups, classes, events can I join?
What areas did I experience growth? How can I continue? What areas would I like to grow in? How will I go about to encourage this growth?
What's something I've always wanted to do? Make a plan to accomplish this. If it takes time or money, start saving and planning.
Are there small changes I can make for self-care?
Do I need to make changes in my physical health? Start small and build from there. Would being a part of a group or class help keep me motivated and accountable?
Is there a way I can contribute to my community? Ways I can serve? Serving others can change your whole attitude and mood.
Do I need to improve my financial situation? Do I need a job change, more training/education, different type of field to work in, learn how to budget, etc.? What sources can I go to for information?
How can I keep learning, keep my mind engaged?
How do I manage my time? What distractions with my phone can I eliminate or decrease?
What helps me manage stress? What techniques are helpful to me?
Find something to be grateful for each day. It will change your outlook on things and make you feel happier.
How can I better connect to God and increase my spirituality?
How do I interact with others? Can I make changes in my attitude, how I speak, etc? How can I break negative thinking and habits? Can I handle conflict better? What can I do to help me learn skills to help in how I relate to others?
These are just a few questions that might help you determine what first step to take in making your life and the person that you are, improve into something better this year.
The time is now!
Write down your ideas.
Post it notes on your mirror or phone notifications for reminders.
Start with something that you can accomplish within a short period of time to get the ball rolling.
If you falter in your goal, it's ok. Effort matters. Pick yourself up and start again.
Good luck! I believe that good changes, even small, can come when we try to improve.
Take courage!
Determine to make a change or two in your life and circumstances this year!
