Booklist #6

Curl up with a good book this winter,

we've rounded up 8 books for you,

some of our family's recent reads.

Hope you find one here to enjoy yourself!

A fictional tale based on the real-life story of the Martel family. They are generational famers with German heritage and live in Ukraine during WWII. As Stalin's forces near, they must leave their home to be protected by the Germans. It's a no-win situation- run with the bear or run with the wolf. Incredible the tenacity, love and family bonds. Harrowing experiences this family went through to survive. It will inspire you. (some language, war situations)

Two ladies in the hospitality industry are burned out of their jobs and join a 60-day job swap program.
They switch jobs from a high-end Seattle hotel to a rundown fishing camp. Each has their challenges but it's their approach to the job that makes the difference. Maybe they won't want to swap back or they might be forced to.

Caroline has a family that's been shaped by their relatives' decisions in the past, assumptions and scandals. When a story is about to be published about her family by her old college friend Mat, she goes on a quest to find answers in letters and diaries from her grandma and her twin sister. Caroline and Mat uncover stories of spies, secrets, sacrifice, love and heartbreak. What they discover might just heal her family's past hurt and relationships that have always been rocky.

The Keeper of Happy Endings
Soline works in a fashion house during WWII. Her family has designed magical wedding dresses for centuries. If you are lucky enough for them to make one for you, you are guaranteed a happy ending for your marriage. As a young woman, through a series of events, she leaves Paris for the US and has to reinvent herself. Years later, with her own shop, she is injured in a fire and grapples with her new life and memories of the past. Rory's fiancé has been kidnapped while on a humanitarian trip. That worry along with her perfectionist mother wanting to rule her life, keep Rory huddled up in her apartment for weeks. She is enchanted by a vacant building as she walks home and decides to pursue her dream of opening an art gallery, as she remembers the encouraging words of her fiancé.  Soline and Rory's paths will cross and their lives will never be the same. A lot of twists and turns that keep you reading more! (Some brief language and mention of a homosexual character)

Do our fears or anxieties stop us from following our dreams? Are we living the life we want or holding back because of assumptions, loss of priorities or lack of confidence? What if you said YES to getting out of your comfort zone and really living life.  Kelsy and Georgina tackle these questions when they reflect on their life after health scares. A friendship develops between this unlikely pair. Throw in a road trip and possible romance along the way.  Loved seeing the transformation of these characters when they start saying YES to a more fulfilling life. It made me reflect on things that might be holding me back too. 10/10

A proper romance. Socialite Anna Lane wants to leave a London scandal behind her and unwillingly is sent to check out an investment deal for her father. To make matters worse, the deal is with his longtime business partner and protégée Graham in his hometown so she will be staying with his family. They come to find out that as you really get to know someone, misconceptions and assumptions often prove false. Secrets are also revealed and attachments formed. Will station and wealth hold the couple back?

Another lesser-known story about WWII that I had never heard of. The story follows 3 military nurses, Army, Navy and Filipina and their experiences during the war in the Philippines. They all became the first military women prisoners of war. Learn of their harrowing experience, resilience, hope and connection in this thought-provoking fictional story based on real events and situations for nurses in the war. It still amazes me the grit and fortitude people have to withstand and overcome deplorable situations.

You'll enjoy this regency comedy/romance. Commoner Bella and her cousin Lady Isabella (Issie) have grown up together and are in London for Issie's season, a year after the sudden death of her cruel and controlling mother. They stay with their prejudiced Aunt whose eyesight isn't the best and keeps mixing them up. Issie convinces Bella to run with the mix-up and change places with each other. Issie is terrified and so anxious about the season and being presented to the Queen at court, that even makes her ill. She figures switching places is better than having to navigate a season of balls, receptions and being around so many people. See how this pans out for the two cousins. A quick read.
