Friendship Star- Quilt Block of the Month- July

 Feeling patriotic this month

so we had to have a star pattern for our block.

Loving the story behind the Friendship Star block.

This star pattern was often used during pioneer days
by those living back east to make a quilt for their friends traveling out west.
Those moving could remember their friendships back home
and feel that warmth from the quilt like a hug,
as they traveled and settled in new, wild places.

You'll need two different fabrics, 1/4 yard of each.
Choose one fabric to be your star and one to be the background.
Cut out of the star fabric:
1--3 1/4" square and 2--3 3/4" square
Cut out of the background fabric:
2-- 3 2/4" squares and 4--3 1/4" squares

Take all the 3 3/4" squares,

Draw a diagonal line on the back side of the 2 lighter colored squares.
(Mine is the background squares.)
Place a 3 3/4" background square on top of a 3 3/4" star fabric square,
 with right sides together.

Sew 1/4" from either side of your drawn line on both squares.

Cut down the middle along your drawn line.

Fold open.
Iron seams to one side on back.
Iron front.
Trim any overhanging fabric at the corners.
You'll now have 4 squares with a triangle of each fabric on either side.

Take the 3 1/4" squares- one in the star fabric and 4 in the background color.

Lay them out in this pattern. with the star fabric square in the center
and the 4 background squares in each corner.

Sew the top row of 3 squares together.
Then the middle 3 and the bottom 3.
Iron seams on back and iron front.

Sew these 3 strips together.
Iron.

Trim up the sides so you end up with a 8"x8" finished block.

Print off your Friendship Star pattern

We are halfway there!
If you're just joining us,
we are learning a new quilt block pattern each month this year
and will be putting it all together next January into a quilt.
All the block patterns have been chosen for beginners.
You can do this!
We also include a printable instruction sheet for each block.
It's easy to catch up this summer.
Just type in "quilt block of the month" into our search bar
to find all the previous months.
