Dancing Ribbon Block- Quilt Block of the Month- May

This month reminds us of spring activities,

celebrations and May poles with their flowing ribbons.

Our block this month is called dancing ribbon.

It might look complicated,

but it's the same process we've used the past couple months

to get squares that are half one fabric and half another.

It's all in the placement of these squares to make our dancing ribbon.

You'll need 1/4 yard of 2 fabrics

(one will be the ribbon and the other the background)

Cut a 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" square out of each of your fabrics

Plus- cut one 3 1/4" square out of the lighter fabric- to be part of the background.

Put your two 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" squares on top of each other

 with right sides together.

Draw 2 diagonals on one side making an "X".

Sew a 1/4" seam from each side of the drawn lines.

With your pen and ruler,
draw a line through the center of the block out to the middle of each side.

Cut along each drawn line.
You'll have triangles.

Fold open and press the seam on back.
Press on the front.
cut off the over-hanging seam to make it square.
(bottom left in picture)

Take your 8 squares and the extra 3 1/4" square cut out of the background fabric,

Align them in this manner to make your "ribbon".

Sew each horizontal row of the 3 squares together with a 1/4" seam allowance.
Press the seams after each step.

Sew the top piece to middle.
and then sew the bottom to that section.
Press.

Trim about 1/4" off each side
to square it up to an 8"x8" square
