Bowl Block- Quilt Block of the Month- April

 Spring is in the air.

Time for flower blooms and Easter egg hunts.

That's the inspiration for this month's quilt block.

We are going to make a bowl shape,
holding some Easter goodies.
You'll need 1/4 yard of 3 different fabrics.
One for the bowl, one for the background and one for the bowl contents.
Choose a fabric with flowers, eggs or something Easter/Spring
to be sitting in the bowl.

Cut out of background fabric: one 3"x3", one 3 1/2"x 3 1/2", one 2"x8" and one 2 1/4"x 8"
Cut out of the bowl fabric: one 3 1/2"x 3 1/2" and one 3"x3"
Cut out of the contents fabric: one 3"x3 and 2 1/2" x 4"

Take the 3"x3" squares of background and contents,
put on top of each other with right sides together.
Take the 3 1/2"x 3 1/2" of the background and bowl squares,
put on top of each other with right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the stack squares.

Sew 1/4" on each side of that line.

Cut along the drawn line.

Fold out and iron the seam to one side on back.
Iron on front.

You'll have 2 squares.
Cut off the overhanging fabric to square it up.

Take the 3"x3"  piece of bowl fabric
and place it in the middle of your 2 squares with half bowl fabric.

Sew these together.
Iron seams.
You have the completed bowl!

Do the same with the contents fabric
using the 2 1/2" x 4" piece
and place it in the middle of your 2 squares with half bowl fabric.

Iron seams.
Attach the top piece to the bottom piece with right sides together.

Iron seams.

Sew the background 2"x8" to the top ege with contents.
and the background 2 1/4"x 8" along the bottom edge of bowl.

Iron the seams to one side on back and iron front of square.
You've got it!

Take your ruler and slightly trim the block sides to get and 8"x8" square if needed.
Print off directions for the bowl block:

  1. I’ve always wanted to try and quilt. You make it look so easy too. I’ll have to give it a try one day.
